Overview
7000 Acre Commercial Farm
The SMART Farm project is located on a 7000 acre commercial farm managed and owned by the University of New England, located 10 km north west of the main campus. SMART Farm stands for Sustainable, Manageable, Accessible, Rural Technology Farm.
The SMART Farm is linked via the NBN and will be a national demonstrator site showcasing the latest on-site technologies aimed at improving productivity, environmental sustainability, safety, workflow and social/business support networks on Australian farms.
The SMART Farm comprises a “Command Centre”, visitor and Tutorial space with Boardroom and offices. Enhanced ICT and Audio Visual infrastructure will give students hands-on experience with modern technologies that aim to revolutionise the way Australian farms are managed.
The building is a trapezoidal shaped steel framed structure sitting on a concrete slab with piers down to rock. There is a 100m insulation layer under the slab.
The roof is constructed of insulated panel with a Custom-orb sheet top & bottom. The walls are clad in Custom-orb and Blackbutt, glazing to the north, south and east and Vitrapanel to the west.
Finishes and fixtures include polished concrete, exposed roof panels, suspended timber feature ceilings, acoustic panels, workstations and commercial furniture.
The project has its own wastewater facilities, rainwater storage facilities, fire fighting water tank, and a 4000 litre LPG tank.
Civil works included a new Bus Bay, car parking area, stormwater dispersion trenches and decomposed granite footpath to the new building.
The project was completed in March 2015.
