Overview
Winner of the 2013 Master Builders Association of NSW – Best Educational Building.
The upper level of the building is a multi-purpose hall, including back of house, control rooms, amenities and foyer. The school has a well know strong musical faculty, as a result the sound audio and video equipment was a major feature of the facility.
The lower level includes a gym, under-croft area, amenities and storage. The introduction of a lift into the building was an essential part of the school’s philosophy of access for all abilities.
The groundwork’s were made interesting by the fact that construction was over a disused landfill site. The soil and grounds were highly reactive. The structure was designed such that in other scenarios a far more substantial building could be built on these footings.
The roof structure was an intricate structural steel design detailed to accentuate the steps and lines of the roof and external walls.
One of the great challenges was ensuring the continued operation of the school, particularly around exam times. Strong lines of communication were developed early and continued throughout the project.
The exterior is clad with a variety of finishes including Colorbond, Polycarb and masonry finishes. These were cleverly used to ensure a lighter structure, allowing the use of natural light and energy efficiency but then to protect compartments in the event of fire.
The building is fully air-conditioned, and is also protected by the latest in security systems.
Bennett Constructions received recognition for this project being the Winner of the 2013 Master Builders Association of NSW – Regional Building Awards Northern Rivers – Best Educational Building ($1m – $5m).
