Overview
The facility remained operational while being rebuilt.
Maclean Accident and Emergency Department was a challenge from the outset. The facility had to remain operational while effectively stripping the whole area bare and then rebuild.
The ambulance zones, and maintaining access was critical. Infection and dust control where reviewed and monitored daily.
The facility is facing west, and with the introduction of full height glazing to this elevation the extreme weather variables create some challenges for the mechanical services.
The building footprint is sitting on very dense sandstone rock. With some very confined spaces we needed to cut for the building provision, footings and ground services. Literally we were cutting the stone with roadsaws and removing it by hand as we could not get machinery into the work zone.
Security was a major issue for the hospital staff. Security screening was introduced between A & E and triage.
